Regional universities emphasise need to recycle
AUE & Georgetown University SFS-Q latest to develop green initiatives
The American University in the Emirates (AUE) organised 'AUE goes green' campaign.
The goal of the campaign is to highlight the importance of recycling and making some small changes in the lives of the community by increasing awareness about the importance of preserving the environment.
Saleha Abbasi, acting manager, department of student affairs, said: "Recycling is one of the best ways to have a positive impact on the world in which we live. It is important for both the natural environment and for us. The benefits of recycling are many but most important of them are saving energy, saving land space, saving money, creating new jobs, reducing air and water pollution and preserving habitat for wildlife."
"It is a way of life that needs to be learnt, practiced and then passed on to our youngsters to transform the world," she added.
AUE students were asked to make use of the newly installed paper recycling bins in each department of the university.
This follows the news of Georgetown University School of Foreign Services-Qatar initiating various recycling programs across its campus.
Clare Wait, director of facilities management at the university, told Facilities Management Middle East, that the university has already implemented paper and cardboard recycling.
"We’re implementing plastic recycling this year. Paper and cardboard recycling [already happen] at the university and in some of our residential compounds. We are intending to continue to spread that out to all of our residential compounds in the next couple of months," she added.
She also outlined some initiatives that were taken in the last year. "We’ve also in the last year done some power saving and water saving initiatives, trying to promote reduction of power and water usage both at work and at home."
Wait added: "We’ve implemented initiatives on the power side to reduce our use by changing lamps over to LED, which massively reduced the wattage use and power consumption but also the heat production, and therefore the necessary air conditioning. But the great thing about that is that it massively reduces the maintenance requirement as well because the lamps don’t need to be replaced so often."
She said awareness on recycling and sustainability can be raised through action. "How do we increase awareness? I mean, this is how we do it. By coming up with these initiatives and implementing them. That’s the best way of increasing awareness."
