Tools of the Trade: Farnek Avireal
A look at the most important equipment used by the Farnek team
P. Prakash, divisional manager — maintenance discusses the tools Farnek’s team uses on-site
Farnek is a total integrated facilities management company with offices throughout the UAE. Farnek is also a market leader in sustainability — besides being a member of the US Green Building Council, Farnek has associations with international organisations such as Green Globe and myclimate.
The firm has also been lead consultant on numerous green projects partnering with the Government of Dubai’s Department of Tourism Commerce and Marketing, the UAE Swiss Business Council and most recently the Emirates Environmental Group.
In addition, Farnek is the sole distributor for market-leading sustainable cleaning products, 5 Star artificial grass, as well as energy and water saving devices, which all provide a consistent return on investment.
While the team has a lot of equipment in its arsenal, some trusted tools are listed below:
The Irisys and Testo IR thermal image cameras are extensively used for building inspection and electrical maintenance.
We make use of them for energy auditing of building insulation and detection of refrigerant leaks, roof inspection, moisture detection in walls and roofs (often part of mold remediation), masonry wall structural analysis, and electrical panel maintenance.
The SKF infra-red shaft alignment tool is an easy to use laser shaft alignment tool, which requires no special training to operate. Compared to traditional dial indicator methods, the shaft alignment process is greatly simplified, as no additional calculations are required in order to make the necessary adjustments.
The Fluke cable and pipe locator is used ideally to trace cables in walls as well as underground, locating fuses/breakers, on final circuits as well as locating interruptions and short-circuit in cables and the electrical floor heating system.
The Fluke portable appliance tester is used to test the household appliances, with a dedicated key for each test for ‘one-touch’ testing. It is designed to carry out the following: insulation test (500V dc), earth bond test 200 mA and 25 A with test lead zero facility, substitute leakage current test, IEC lead test, leakage test, appliances power and load current test, PELV test (protective extra low voltage).
The Fluke analyser performs the measurements required to maintain power systems, troubleshoot power problem and diagnose equipment failure.
The battery impedance hi-tester, which is made by Japanese brand Hioki, is a measuring instrument for judging battery wear by measuring internal resistance, voltage and terminal temperature.
Another product by the Hioki group, the earth (hi) resistance tester, uses the AC phase differential system to measure the earth resistance. This assures accurate measurement unaffected by earth voltage and auxiliary earthing resistance. Its measurement range is an Earth resistance 10~1000 ohms, and Earth voltage 0~30 volt.
Finally, the Dewalt cordless drill/drive kit is used for drill/drive purposes in remote areas where electrical power supply is unavailable or difficult to plug in.
