Five minutes with Charalampos Sarafopoulos, Al Shirawi FM
Charalampos Sarafopoulos, head of operations UAE at Al Shirawi FM talks to fmME about his take of the current state of the FM market
What does your role involve?
I am looking after the operations across UAE for Al Shirawi FM reassuring that our teams, assigned to our projects, deliver high quality services by complying with the respective contractual obligations in order not only to meet but to exceed our client’s expectations.
What do you love most about your job?
I love seeing my team members improve and develop themselves. Receiving client’s appreciation for your team’s work and performance is a feeling that cannot be purchased.
What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
People…having to deal daily with numerous different personalities, it could be members of my team or clients. The continuous effort to adjust yourself, your personality, and mind-set in order to discover the suitable communication channel is an ongoing process.
What is the most memorable project and why?
I always try and dedicate each project with the same amount of care and attention. Each and every project that I have dealt with have had unique and memorable characteristics. To single one out — I had the opportunity to work on one of the biggest FM contracts assigned to a single contractor in the Gulf; the complexity, criticality and the geographical dispersion of the sites included in the project drove the team to exceed expectations on a daily bases.
Where do you see the FM industry in five years?
The FM companies that will be able to adjust themselves in a low profitability market and, at the same time, invest on technology and on their people’s development will play a significant role. Energy savings will become a mandatory aspect (if not already) to each and every FM contract. The FM Industry matures day by day.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I’ve been an amateur writer, and my first book has been four years in the making. In parallel, playing the guitar and reading books provide me with much-needed inspiration when not working on my book.
