Dubai debuts new advanced waste collection system
A new advanced waste collection system has been introduced in Dubai's Al Mamzar area
Dubai’s Waste Management Department has debuted an advanced method for waste collection in the Al Mamzar area.
Eng. Abdulmajeed Saifaie, Director of Waste Management Department said: “We are on introducing efficient and effective systems in collection, storage and transportation of waste in order to meet the strategic objectives and requirements of the Smart Government, while adhering to international best practices and practical experiences in the field of smart waste management.”
The new system will only be implemented in Al Mamzar area but it’s expected to be gradually introduced in parts of Dubai.
“Members of the Sustainable Waste Management Awareness Team in the department have carried out visits to 133 housing units in Al Mamzar to create awareness among the residents of the area on the importance of the project and to seek their participation in the Department's efforts aimed at disseminating the culture of waste sorting from the source,” said Saifaie.
As part of the project two containers have been provided, one for general waste, the other for collecting recycling materials.
In addition, new advanced waste collection trucks with high technical and operational specifications and a different appearance have been introduced.
“The new vehicles have advanced features that meets sustainable transport standards; the engines are designed to meet high energy use and they run on cleaner fuel options,” he said.
Along with other operational advantages, the new trucks are able to empty garbage containers from both sides of the road at the same time with the possibility of unloading the containers placed above or below the ground.
The system also has sophisticated washing units to clean and sterilise the containers on-site using little water to do so.
