Expo 2020 explains waste management plans
Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau not only confident of achieving high landfill diversion rate of 85%, but puts in place strong reuse plan in place
The Expo 2020 Dubai gave out its first FM-related contract earlier this week when it announced that Dulsco would be the global event’s waste management partner.
And following the announcement, the organisers of the event have revealed the breakdown of waste, which is expected to include 48% organic material, 39% recyclables and 13% general waste.
Dulsco will process organic material using composting solutions such as turning food waste into fertilisers and diverting waste streams to create bio-fuels.
Recyclable material such as paper and cardboard will be turned into mouldable products, such as cup holders, seed pots and boutique gift boxes, for use on the Expo site.
Used glass will be upcycled into Expo memorabilia in partnership with local SME ChoChoma, and plastic will be converted into a variety of products such as bags and t-shirts.
For general waste, Dulsco is evaluating waste-to-energy opportunities that will contribute to the long-term environmental legacy of Expo 2020 Dubai.
Dulsco will also run public education campaigns in partnership with Expo 2020 to raise awareness about the importance of responsible consumerism and leading sustainable lifestyles.
The campaign will engage school and university students through insightful discussions and workshops led by industry experts, while also shedding light on career opportunities in the field of environmental sustainability.
Expo 2020 Dubai expects to attract 25 million visits between October 2020 and April 2021, and 70 per cent of its visitors are projected to come from outside the UAE – the largest proportion of international visitors in the 168-year history of World Expos.
More than 200 participants, including countries, corporations, multinational organisations and educational institutions are expected to be part of the Expo
In addition to Dulsco, Expo 2020 Dubai has collaborated with Premier Partners: Accenture, Cisco, DP World, Emirates NBD, Etisalat, Emirates Airline, Mastercard, Nissan, PepsiCo, SAP and Siemens; along with DEWA, Emirates Hospitality Group, ENOC, UPS, DarkMatter and Orient Insurance.
