Dubai's Sheikh Zayed Road gets 100 smart waste containers
The environment-friendly, solar-powered containers were placed for waste storage along both sides of the highway by Dubai Municipality's Waste Management Department
The UAE's Sheikh Zayed Road has been lined with 100 'smart' waste containers by Dubai Municipality (DM).
DM's Waste Management Department distributed the environment-friendly containers for waste storage along both sides of the highway.
The smart containers are [...] solar-powered and equipped with electronic devices and high-precision sensors to monitor and measure the level of waste.
Phase 1 of the project, which includes the latest roll-out, spans from the Dubai World Trade Centre roundabout, to the first interchange, which links the bridge of Safa Street and Financial Centre Street.
DM said the project is aimed at encouraging waste separation and increasing the efficiency of recycling programmes in the area.
The containers have been equipped to monitor the geographic distribution, storage, and operations of waste storage in the city.
Automatic waste compression systems installed in the containers will help to boost their capacity, which is around eight times higher than regular containers distributed in the city.
Eng Abdulamajeed Saifaie, director of DM's Waste Management Department, and head of DM's Sustainable Waste Management Awareness Team, said the containers would help to reduce the carbon footprint and improve the environment.
He added: "The smart containers are [...] solar-powered and equipped with electronic devices and high-precision sensors to monitor and measure the level of waste."
Solar cells installed within the containers span 1sqm, which is expected to improve the operational efficiency of waste collection, storage, and transport by 80%.
"When the container is full, it reports by sending an instant signal to the control centre to carry out the unloading when needed," Saifaie said, according to WAM.
"The innovative containers also contain two openings; one for general waste, and the other for recyclable materials such as glass, packaging, plastic, paper, and so on."
