Five minutes with Biju BT, Al-Fajer FM
What does your role involve?
I have been associated with the FM industry for more than 20 years. As head of engineering at Al Fajer Facilities Management, I manage the MEP, civil and landscaping divisions, besides a specialised painting unit. My role involves providing leadership and oversight for the technical services to ensure effective project management and enhancing client experience in line with the vision of the organisation.
What do you love most about your job?
I am at core a technical person and what I enjoy is the direct involvement in technical aspects of the services we offer. It is challenging to identify root cause of issues, analysis of the day to day operations and oversee each project’s life cycle from conception to completion.
What is the most memorable project and why?
Turn key projects are something which I enjoy working on as they are challenging and unique for the industry. My recent memorable project was with Emarat for an air conditioning improvement and maintenance project across all its outlets in the UAE. The time frame for the project was three months, which was a major test, considering all facilities were up and running. R& D was carried out at some of the stations to identify the root cause of the issue and the experience we gained was amazing.
Where do you see the FM industry in 5 years?
UAE FM industry will focus on a green energy concept along with solutions for reduced operating budget. I feel another growing factor is more digitisation in FM industry to optimise asset /deployment utilisation.
What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
In the current market conditions, cost containment is a challenge, especially when there are no compromises on the service or turnaround time.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Weekends are normally spent with family or friends. I enjoy watching movies, and I try to catch up on the latest ones whenever I get the time. I take out time to network and socialise with other industry professionals to discuss current market trends and upcoming events.
