Five minutes with... Neil Dempster
Neil Dempster, contract manager, Masdar City and Masdar Institute, Abu Dhabi
What does your role involve?
My core role is the daily operation and management of over 500 employees, services and systems within the Masdar City boundaries in Abu Dhabi. As I am also the head of the CAFM of system operation at Cofely Besix FM, my role also includes the continued development of the platform including the driving of innovation through the CAFM platform.
What do you love most about your job?
I love finding solutions to difficult problems and challenges. Having the ability and support to try new things to see if the goal can be achieved in a smarter way.
What is the most memorable project and why?
It has to be without question, Etihad Airways Engineering. It was mobilised in extremely short timeframes into a 45-year-old aircraft maintenance facility. The reason for this project being so memorable is simple, failure was not an option. Any delays to aircraft departure affected countless people, all goes back to what I love, extremely challenging project.
Where do you see the FM industry in 5 years?
I see the industry as a whole moving away from the on-site maintenance teams to a more predictive approach using “smart” tools and predictive technologies.
I believe the role of Artificial Intelligence and usable “IoT” data will become even more of a staple and an opportunity for the end users / clients to drive the best value from their FM Service partner.
What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
As times have changed so has the areas of difficulty. A few years ago, it was managing a less skilled workforce but has changed since then. My new challenge is implementing strategic facilities management, educating the customers on the value of this approach and working in true partnership.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love dune bashing and playing golf. Both activities allow me to get outside and enjoy being where we are.
