Five minutes with... Michael Nicholas
Michael Nicholas, General Manager, Tafawuq Facilities Management
What does your role involve?
As the general manager of Tafawuq in the UAE I supervise the operations of the facility management company, as well as the company’s project management business and fit-out business. I am also tasked to define the organisation’s business strategies, business development techniques, and financial management approaches, to cite a few. My primary role, however, is to extend support to our people and our customers.
What do you love most about your job?
I love conducting unannounced site visits in Ras Al Khaimah, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi wearing the Tafawuq technician uniform. During these visits, I check operational efficiency of every site as well as engage meaningfully with teams and customers.
What is the most memorable project and why?
On Reem Island in Abu Dhabi, there is a place called Reem Village. Just outside Reem Village is a simple bus stop. I’m often reminded of this small project as I drive past it because not only does it offer relief from the sun to public commuters, but it’s also where my first project with Tafawuq was located when I joined the company three years ago.
Where do you see the FM industry in 5 years?
Technology will play an increasing role in our industry as it strives to improve operational efficiencies. I expect to see an increasing trend in companies with in-house or outsourced FM teams. Consolidation within FM companies themselves is also expected.
What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
At Tafawuq, we are constantly looking to improve quality, while also reducing cost. It is a challenging task, but it is something that we are able to achieve on a daily basis. This takes a considerable amount of time, constantly challenging ourselves to improve and to be better at what we do.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
My wife and I both like to keep fit so we run and cycle, often competing in races. Scuba diving is also a passion of mine. In fact, I am a qualified scuba diving instructor.
