Comment: Leveraging the power of ultra violet to fight super bugs
Rachid Noujeim, CEO, Middle East, Sodexo, writes about the use of cleaning robots in healthcare
Sodexo has looked after the cleanliness and wellbeing of healthcare facilities for decades, providing comprehensive service solutions to hospitals and healthcare institutions in 39 countries around the world. As our unique combination of environmental services (housekeeping, bio-cleaning of patient rooms and operating rooms) and support services (laundry services, patient interactive systems and transport services) contribute to enhancing the reliability, hygiene, safety and comfort of healthcare environments – we continue to focus on innovation to combat infections and the growing risk of super bugs that can escape even the most rigorous cleaning protocols.
Ultra Violet Lights (UVC) are the latest innovation in the fight against super bugs, viruses, mould, pathogens and bacteria. New research has shown that UV lights can be a safe and effective way to slow viruses, pathogens, mould and bacteria in public places like hospitals, schools and nursing homes. The light waves themselves break into the cellular structure and destroy even the nastiest bugs from the very base of their DNA. On a micro level, anything exposed to the light – dies.
At Sodexo, we’re leveraging the power of UVC with our Xenex Germ-Zapping Robots. The Xenex robot pulses a xenon lamp to create an intense germicidal UV light that quickly disinfects surfaces such as bedrails, tray tables, bathroom handrails and toilet seats. The Xenex technology has been tested and proven on the most common, and the most dangerous and difficult-to-treat microorganisms, including Clostridium difficile (C.diff), Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), norovirus and even the Ebola virus.
And the results are both tangible and remarkable. Hospitals using Xenex robots have reported, in peer-reviewed studies, 50-100% decreases in their infection rates.
At Sodexo we are as sensitive to global trends as we are to local needs. The Middle East consumers are ready to embrace AI and robots for their healthcare needs and with proof of the efficiency and reliability of UVC technology, we are offering these solutions to our clients.
While the power and science of UV has been around for some time, the broad deployment into healthcare facilities is a major step in the fight against super bugs – and just one area where innovation from Sodexo is underpinning quality of life through cleaning and support services.
