Iain Fyfe, head of FM, Transguard Group
What does your role involve?
As the head of facilities management at Transguard, I look after a workforce of 4,500 across the business unit. My role involves crafting FM business solutions and overseeing health and safety, quality and auditing for all projects. Ensuring operational excellence and managing the overall financial performance of the facilities management unit within Transguard are my key areas of focus. I also look after Transguard Living, a straight-to-consumer home services company delivering first class home maintenance, cleaning and home moving services across the UAE.
What do you love most about your job?
The fact that no two days are the same, there are constantly new challenges every week, new industries to cater to, and there is the continuous potential to improve upon and do things better. Moreover, I’m surrounded by a team of consummate professionals who are good at what they do and passionate about facilities management, so it’s a pleasure to work with them every day.
What is the most memorable project and why?
We recently mobilised the UAE’s largest financial institution project that comprised of over 200 work sites spread across the country. It was a very complex mobilisation that posed many challenges along the way, but the bigger the challenge the more satisfying it is when you achieve your goal.
What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
Trying to maintain quality levels in a market that is constantly looking for cost saving, reductions and efficiencies. It comes down to a balancing act of being able to deliver savings while maintaining the quality level for which Transguard has become renowned.
Where do you see the FM industry in five years?
I think that Expo 2020 will have a big influence on the direction of facilities management in this country. It will leave a legacy of more sustainable and innovative solutions as well as a bigger emphasis on the use of technology in FM. We currently use the likes of smart washroom technology and robot cleaners, but I feel this will become more advanced and widespread in the next five years.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I’m a football fanatic and I enjoy playing golf. I also love hanging out with my wife and daughter, who often get dragged into either playing or watching some form of sport with me.
